MUD-RACING.NET INTERVIEW |
July 16th, 2003
MUD-Racing.net:
Hello Greg and thanks a lot for doing the
interview with us. I would like to start off by
congratulating you on your first Main Event win in
the ACDelco Late Models. How does it feel to
finally achieve this after the three seasons of
hard work that you put into this operation?
Greg Leonard:
First of all, thank you for interviewing me. It
has been a fun week! It feels great when you
accomplish something that you set out to do. And
that question that has lately been most frequently
asked "Have you all won a race yet?" can finally
be answered with a 'yes'.
MUD: I understand there were some issues
and a lack of crew on the night of your first win.
Can you give us the details?
Greg: I think it was just one of those
deals were nothing was going right and the timing
was off. We struggled all day with a chassis that
wouldn’t cooperate and a primary engine that was
just plain unproven. Our Crew Chief/Spotter,
Jalil, was on his honey moon. Our Tire Man,
Skeeter, had an infection in his eye. Our Gas Man,
Mark, had a dislocated shoulder. And Dave was
tackling Stockton 99 Speedway that night in his
own SRL car. I'm sure they would have all liked to
be there. They are all part of this team and all
have worked hard for it. Steffen Mueller, Donald
Kelly and Nick Leonard did a great job picking up
the slack.
MUD: You had a very rough first half of the
season, but at least it ended with a win, what are
you plans and goals for the second half of the
season?
Greg: Well, you had to remind me about the
first part of this season. Wow, it just goes to
show you how tough this sport really is at any
level which you compete. We plan to go forward and
just keep doing what we have been doing. We work
hard week after week, and I believe that it will
keep paying off.
MUD: From what I have heard, you took a
long path to get into stock car racing… How did
you get into racing in general? And how did short
track racing come into the picture?
Greg: As you might know, I am an ex drag
racer. Growing up in the city made it hard to do
any kind of racing but drag racing was much easier
to get into. I had always liked stock car racing
so when the opportunity came calling I was very
eager to give it a shot.
MUD: What made you decide on Altamont’s
Late Models as the place to jump start you’re
racing career?
Greg: To be honest, it just kind of worked
out that way. We ran one year of Enduros and a few
Bomber races at the All American Speedway in
Roseville, CA, and wanted to move into a premier
type division. Altamont was where we ended up.
Maybe it was there pitch, "Fastest 1/2 Mile in the
West".
MUD: Do you have any goals set as a driver
of what you would like to do in the near or
distant future?
Greg: DAYTONA! But in the mean time,
seriously, we are hoping to move up next year,
maybe into the SRL division and eventually
further. But, as a driver, I feel that I have to
be able to excel at different types of tracks. So,
the open shows that we plan to attend later in the
season will be very important to the team and
myself.
MUD: Thank you for your time, you did an
awesome job Saturday, good luck for your races to
come, and is there anything else you would like to
say? Any sponsors you would like to thank?
Greg: I would like to thank our families
and friends, and all our fans including all of you
that cheered so loudly Saturday night, I
appreciated that. I would like to thank
